With his creativity, commercial and delivery mind-set, Rik has for almost 34 years delivered value to the Royal Dutch Shell Group in a great variety of technical and management positions and in a variety of cultural environments. Based on an excellent understanding of the physical, technical, economic, political and social aspects of the oil industry he is known for delivering practical solutions in asset development and project execution as well as operational, safety and environmental performance.
Rik’s technical roles have included both onshore assets and offshore assets, including deep water. They comprised feasibility studies, concept engineering, detailed design, construction management, commissioning, operations, maintenance and integrity management, environmental management, abandonment (de-commissioning and re-instatement) and portfolio management.
He has directly operated the interfaces with subsurface and well engineering, with downstream and shipping, with economics, legal and commercial, with JV partners, regulators and government.
Management roles have included contract management, R&D management, project management, trouble shooting, technical consultancy, HSSE management, business development, asset management and environmental management. At times the solutions were supported by emphasis on external affairs and communication.
Areas of deep technical knowledge include pipelines, production assets, technical and operational integrity, HSSE and the natural environment.
Creativity has been demonstrated many times by the development of novel approaches and out-of-the-box solutions and by quickly recognizing such in the proposals of others. An example of a radically different solution was a lump sum detailed design contract that saved 70% of the cost and 50% of the schedule compared with similar contracts and was a win-win with the detailed design contractor. Another example was the transparency drive in the Nigeria oil spills situation through the spills website.
Rik is an inspiring team player as well as leader who has managed large teams to deliver high quality technical results within contractual, budget and schedule targets, whilst keeping the safety of his team and not compromising the preservation of the environment and the interests of his “neighbours”.
He has excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate at all levels. Both his training courses and his conference appearances are always inspiring and laced with personal experience examples. He has the rare skill to make complex issues easy to understand and always has licence to operate in mind.
Areas where Rik has worked on international assignments include France, Egypt, UK, Syria, Oman, Kazakhstan, Norway and Nigeria, whilst in consultancy roles he has delivered also in Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Iran, Germany, Kenya, USA, Canada, Bolivia, Malaysia, Brunei, Australia, Thailand and Philippines.
Rik has recently joined Triple EEE Management Support B.V. as Senior Consultant Integrity Management and Project Management. He also acts as General Manager of the recently established Abu Dhabi office of Triple EEE.
He can be made available for short-term roles as SME (Subject Matter Expert) in case his expertise is required, as well as delivering workshops and training courses. His global experience, technical excellence and management background make him well suited to provide quality advice and constructive support to Oil & Gas companies, but also to other organisations in oil and gas or other related industries. He can help you better understand the opportunities, as well as the risks and uncertainties of your development and construction projects, the strengths and weaknesses of your asset plans and the integrity risks of your production facilities and activities. He can help developing your master plans and tailor the de-risking strategies. He can support your projects with technical, commercial and quality advice. Lastly, he can review the technical quality and integrity of project plans as well as investment proposals.
